Well that's a shame...
By Willie V. Hughes
I bought one of these about 10 years ago in a silver/champagne color and I've been using it weekly ever since. It's been my go-to briefcase. Durable, lightweight, stylish, etc. Although I didn't buy it to be showy, people have complimented me on it for years and have consistently thought it cost a lot more than it actually did. I recently needed to buy another briefcase for a different office location and couldn't find a duplicate Samsonite in silver/champagne, so I bought this black one. Although the exterior if nice-looking and the black color is rather cool, Samsonite went and redesigned the interior-- absolutely ruining what was an awesome briefcase.
This new version has two plastic and very Mickey Mouse pen/supply trays with the absolute cheapest frock felt plastic holders. They are located in the top file folder holder and not removable. There is also a removable center divider (which makes no sense because if anything should be removable, it should be the horrible pen holders). In fairness, the divider is of nice quality, although it stays in the down position and would be nice to be able to secure in the up position-- to hide the godawful plastic trays. One of the plastic trays makes sense (although the execution in design was very, very cheap) because it actually could hold several pens (assuming your pens are uniform in shape and the barrels are all thin). One of the other trays doesn't make any sense because it's too large to hold business cards and they'd fly all around inside (too much vertical space). There is another plastic space (not a tray, but just a space with a piece of elastic over it) that is unclear what could be held in it. The disappointment here is that these trays all take up space, they always remain visible, and they look so cheap. So awfully cheap. I think someone who never saw/owned the previous model wouldn't be as harsh as I am, but I know that the file folder holder on the previous model was so much nicer, durable, and good looking. It's like seeing the new Ferrari using plastic rather than leather for the dashboard.
I'm not going to return the case because it is still a good value overall. I may take a razor blade to it though to cut out the file holder and all the plastic nonsense. Or I will glue the trays shut and ignore them. Leaving them as-is isn't an option because the cheap latches on them mean they may flop open from time to time.
Uhg, Samsonite. You're killing me. You had the best briefcase on the market, and then went low-class with it. Oh well. The hunt will resume for the best briefcase.

Not what it used to be!

I purchased this because I owned one of these about 15 years ago and I was very happy with the craftsmanship. I opened the one I ordered and it looked good on the outside but the inside was garbage. The accessory/pen holder wasn't attached and one of the four clips was broken that was supposed to hold it in place. The pen holder was flimsy and came apart. Samsonite was a brand name I could count on at one time. I returned this item. What a waste of time.

I love this briefcase. My last briefcase was a tad too shallow for my needs. I found this was one of the only cases that was deeper. The added workspace flap thing is genius. If you don't like it, or are looking for just a bit more space, it can be removed.
The big center storage piece on the case when open has a plastic form meant for pens... It's a total waste of space. My pens didn't fit inside there, so I just ripped it out and use it as a general storage compartment. Other than this thing, the only other drawback is the size of this case. Some of my friends tell me that I am carrying a "suitcase". You get used to it. ;)
I'm a computer programmer, and carry this case everyday to work. Laptop, textbooks, notebooks, keys, DVDs, and a few file folders. :) Enjoy.
